Marskalks Guide to Couleurs

Couleur is a piece of ribbon worn by members of student associations for the dress code formal attire, sometimes also for a dark suit. The straps are 35mm wide and designed with distinctive design features that represent specific compounds e.g. section and union associations. For festive attire at Chalmers events, the Chalmers Student Union's tailband should be worn, which is available for purchase at STORE. Section and possible association membership is also usually signposted. The bands are arranged with the most significant band at the top, which at Chalmers is the Union's band. This is usually followed by section bands and committee bands, in that order. An accepted rule, however, is to wear a maximum of three * coat straps at the same time.

Couleurs is attached to the chest under the tailcoat with a slope from the right shoulder to the left waist.

Couleurs for prom dress

The dress is worn with a couleur in the form of a so-called bow. The bow is then attached to the left side, close to the heart, but should be attached in such a way that it does not touch bare skin. It is also possible to attach the bow to the left hip. Chalmers Student Union's Couleur should be worn, this is available for purchase at STORE. Section and possibly association ditto are also usually worn, but a rule is that a maximum of three couleurs can be worn at the same time.

To fold the bow

The bow should be 9 cm wide at the outer edge and 7 cm wide at the inner edge. The most important thing, however, is that all the layers shuld be the same width. Start by placing one end of the band in what will be the middle. Leave the entire band to the left from the center. Fold the ribbon to the right after 4.5 cm. Then fold the ribbon to the left after 9 cm. Now the outer rosette has been created. Fold the strap to the right again after 8 cm and then back to the left after 7 cm. Now the inner rosette has been created. The next step is to fold the ribbon 90 degrees upwards and then wrap it one or two turns around the entire rosette. If a pin belongs to the tailband, this is attached in the middle of the bow and then holds the whole bow together. You can, depending on what you think is nice, iron the folded edges so that the bow becomes flat. In order for the bow to stay nice and not fall apart, one can sew the edges together. The rosette can be attached to the dress with a safety pin or sew it on.

* This rule does not apply if you are asked to decorate the dress code 'with all Orders and pendants', which is usually abbreviated to M.O.O.G.H.. For dress code with M.O.O.G.H you can wear all evening dresses, medals etc that you have to hang on. This is something that mainly occurs at unofficial events.
