WHAT ARE WE READING THIS YEAR?

In each class, we will be exploring a variety of texts including short stories, poems, fiction and nonfiction, and dramas as selcted by the Marsing School District Curriculum; Engage Marsing. This includes the following major texts:

My Perspectives 10th Grade English

My Perspectives 12th Grade British Literature

Dual Credit English 175/Advanced Juniors

• Selection of cannon based literary works reflecting the American Experience from Pre-Colonialism to Post Modern including poetry, short stories, drama, excerpts and novels in coordination with the College of Western Idaho such as, 

  • Hamlet by William Shakespeare;  Hamilton Musical by Lin Manuel Miranda

  • Long Way Down -A novel in Verse by Jason Reynolds

  • The Norton Anthology of Literature - poem and short story selections

  • All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

  • Selection of seminal American historical documents such as the preamble to the Constitution, The Declaration of Independence and significant historical speeches

  • They Say, I Say textbook

  • Read Literature Like a Professor, textbook

WHY DO WE HAVE TO READ THESE BOOKS?

We read whole class novels, poems, short stories, and plays so that we may have a common experience together.  When we can experience a story together, we can discuss the big life questions that the story makes us think about, we can argue about decisions made by the characters, and we can enjoy the surprises, thrills, and tragedy together as a community.  

These books have stood the test of time.  They have brought discussion, debate, controversy, and teach lessons across the generations that have read them.
