More than anything, we are here to learn. To take risks. To engage in hard conversations. To make suggestions about improving the world we live in. To read. To ask more questions. To grow. To experience other cultures. To reflect on our society's good and bad decisions. To figure out where we fit in.
My number one expectation: keep our room a BRAVE SPACE.
When students come to class and have their ideas shut down, it's no longer safe. When we are having a discussion and there are side conversations going on, it's no longer safe. When students are trying something new for the first time and we're not supportive, it's no longer safe. Your job is to check yourself and your behavior - is what I'm doing SUPPORTING the kind of classroom we want to have? Am I taking away someone else's chance to learn? When the answer is yes, we will have a problem, and I will address you about the issue and we will work to resolve it.
Be KIND, Stay ENGAGED, & Work HARD.
Daily Routine

The U.S. Academic Decathlon® is excited to announce that the overall curricular theme for 2024–2025 will be Our Changing Earth
The “focus semesters” for GPA computation for tenth, eleventh-, and twelfth-grade students go back two years prior to the present grade level of the contestant. GPA calculations for ninth-grade students include only their grades earned while in the eighth grade and in the summer session between eighth and ninth grade.
The policy of including a minimum of 4 eligible courses no longer applies since we will have two years of GPA courses included on the calculation forms.
The policy on P/NP and credit/no credit will return to the same as it was pre-pandemic.

Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty will NOT be tolerated under any circumstances. Cheating, copying, or plagiarism of any form will result in failure of the assignment, disciplinary referral, and parent contact.
Late work is only accepted up until the final, summative assessment of the unit. After that assessment, none of the assignments from that unit will be accepted. A ZERO will be put in the gradebook and will stay there until I get a chance to look at your late work. All work turned in on time has first priority, so just a heads up, your zero might stay there for a while. Avoid this by simply turning your work in on time.
Revisions are available for any assignment that is submitted on time. Late work in any case is NOT eligible for revision.
Additional Information
Independent Reading & Classroom Library
Students will be asked to read independently throughout the school year. They should have a book to read with them at all times. Reading goals wlil be set at the beginning of the year.
In my classroom, I have well over 200 books that have been purchased by me or donated to my room. Most have been selected due to recommendations from students, peers, or organizations like the National Council for Teachers of English. However, I have not read every book. It is up to the student and the parent to determine what independent books are and are not appropriate for the student. If you have any books that you, as a parent, would prefer your child not read, please let me know and I will make a note in my records.
