What were the people with guns shooting at?

This bit was in once at the part where Felix comes into an empty building with the stove still on and hot food. But also while he was there, He hears gunshots coming from outside and assumes they were hunting. This bit is still not too clear. What I think it wants to indicate is that there are German Nazi shooting Jewish people.

This is the most likely reason due to the Nazis be able to have firearms and are mean to kill or execute Jewish prisoners. This is also similar to a death march where Jewish people would have to walk across paths for hours with little food and water and might get shot down.

I think that the people firing gunshots would be Nazis shooting at Jewish people or prisoners. It is possibly for execution or they doing something the Nazis do not like. Because most of the streets are pretty deserted because the Nazis are shooting people or captured. Apart from a few Nazis driving on them.
