Addition is represented by the symbol '+'.
Addition can be seen as augmentation ( X is 5 greater/bigger than Y) and aggregation (X and Y together are 10).
Addition is the inverse of subtraction.
The result of an addition is called the sum. The parts of an addition calculation are called addends.
Addition is commutative. This means that the sum of X + Y is equal to the sum of Y + X.
Addition is the first operation children become familiar with. This starts in EYFS and carries on all the way through to Year 6.
In order for students to add larger numbers confidently, they must have mastered their number bonds to 10 by the end of Reception.Â
When you are confident and successful at one step then move on to the next.Â
