Piegaro Forest, not far from Perugia and Lake Trasimeno is the first experience of forest management to have received the certification of sustainable forest management in Umbria. The wood is owned by the Margaritelli family, who has been working in the world of wood for four generations and is the owner of the brand Listone Giordano. The certification covers 160 hectares of wood with a prevalence of Turkey oak, hornbeam and Douglas fir trees in a Site of Community Interest (Sic) in the Upper Valley of Nestore.
In addition to the natural forest, with an evolution guided and programmed by man there is a plant of arboriculture from wood of almost ten hectares with plants of oak, cherry, sorrel, walnut, lime and shrubs able to fix the nitrogen in the soil.
Particular attention is given to the sporadic species of precious wood (wild service tree, cherry, oak, rowan and lime), which are mapped via GPS to protect and enhance the future wood product.
What you can do along the 12 km of ring paths:
walks and pic nic (forbidden to light the fire )
birdwatching (2 towers)

collection of non-wood forest products (mushrooms, berries)

Risk management
The forest doesn't present any particular risks.
The correct use of the road system reduces risks.
Encounters with wild animals are very rare if not unlikely.
Potentially dangerous animals have mostly nocturnal habits and the probability of encountering them during the day, especially if you are in groups, is practically nothing.
For more information on the fauna, see the material on monitoring conducted by the Hyla Nature Study, available among the downloadable documents and in the news & events section (see menu).
The presence of reptiles (including common viper), requires special attention especially when removing stones or rocks with bare hands and walking in the presence of tall grass.
On that, it is always recommended to wear hiking shoes and long pants, even in summer.
Some insects, such as hornets, wasps, and ticks can pose a risk even during the day. As far as possible, it is recommended not to disturb hives and avoid contact with plants that have cavities (which could hide hives).
Walking outside the trails and paths is possible, but it is recommended to avoid riparian areas near ditches for risk of slipping and/or falling favored by important slopes although with very little difference in altitude.
Particular care should be taken on windy days, especially in or near the coniferous forest and near the Lucerne Ditch, where the property borders SP 309 to the north and locust trees with surface anchorage to the ground are detected.
Especially, near the occurrence of important meteor events, some routes may be difficult to use given the flow of rainwater,so maximum attention is recommended.
The document on specific risks can be consulted and downloaded from the stakeholder consultation section.
You should always activate the GPS location on your smartphone (in the woods there is not always a signal, but it could be useful).
It is advisable to avoid travelling alone as much as possible or at least remember to always notify someone who may be aware of your movements.
