Athletic Code

ELIGIBILITY

1.  In order to be academically eligible, a student must have no failing quarter grades in the most recent grade reporting period (quarter grades) or academic evaluation period in order to be eligible.  School rules for calculating GPA shall be followed and the Merrill Area Public School posting date for grades shall be used. All athletes who are in a program or programs outside of the school will also use this date. A student not meeting this criteria will be ineligible for activities for fifteen (15) consecutive scheduled school days and nights. The ineligibility will begin on the fifth (5th) scheduled school day following the end of the first (1st), second (2nd), or third (3rd) quarter which allows for a grace period for grade changes and removal of any incomplete grades. Eligibility for activities that begin on or before the first (1st) quarter of the new academic year shall be based on the previous fourth (4th) quarter grades.

TRAINING RULES

The following training rules are established in the best interest of the student and the school.  Students who comply with these rules demonstrate their desire to dedicate themselves to self-improvement.  These training rules apply year round, in and out of school.

A student shall not

1.  Steal or possess stolen articles.

2.  Buy, sell, use or possess illegal drugs, controlled substances, street drugs, or performance enhancing substances (PES).

3.  Use or possess tobacco products, e-cigarettes, vaping equipment, or look-a-likes.

4.  Use or possess alcohol products, non-alcoholic beer, wine, or look-a-likes.

5.  Conduct him/herself in a manner unbecoming an athlete.  Examples of conduct unbecoming an athlete may include, but are not limited to, the following: (a) prohibits student-athletes from being in attendance at a private gathering, unaccompanied by parents/guardians, where any substances or items prohibited by the athletic code are present or being used/consumed; (b) attending and remaining where any code violation is occurring – not making an effort to remove yourself from the situation immediately (c) violation of a civil law; (d) vandalism; (e) disrespect to school authorities; and, (f) violation of school rules.
