Please check out the photographs below to see a snapshot of this weeks learning. Â
This week there was a lot of team work, the children were set a goal to invent their own story and create a story map collaboratively. As pairs they shared their invited story with the class. They enjoyed creating their own version of Rosie's Walk in their independent writing task. They have also been working together to play games like 'What's the Time Mr. Wolf?', using constuction to build and making sandcastles. In Maths the children have been learning about what 'double' means and used a variety of resources to double numbers. This week for the Curriuclum unit 'Where in the World?', the children have learned about Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to fly across the ocean solo! The children used maps, atlases and globes to explore where they would like to travel to. In RE the children were learning about Eid and how Muslim's celebrate. The children loved speaking about their expriences. Â
On Tuesday, the class went on an educational visit to the London Museum Docklands in Canary Wharf to learn about the history of ships. This enriches and supports what they are learning in the current Curriculum Unit, 'Where in the World?' In the lead-up, to the visit, as a class the children looked at maps to plan their journey to the museum and spoke about road safety. The children were thrilled to ride two different DLR routes and enjoyed taking in the views of East London on the journey whilst talking to their friends about what buildings they could see.
At the museum, the children explored artefacts to learn about the history of ships in the Docklands. The boats are about 200-400 years old and were used to trade goods from places far away. They met the merchants, sailors and pirates who transformed London by bringing back goods such as spices, tea and silk. They visited a recreation of a street in Wapping from the Victorian era to see what life was like in the past.
Check out the photos below to see what we got up to on Science Day! This week, the children took on the role of engineers and created rocket models to fly from Earth to the moon. The rocket needs to travel 250,000 kilometers to reach the moon. On Science Day they tested their rockets to see how far they would fly, blowing the rocket with a straw to create thrust to push the rocket upwards into the air. They also explored multiple colour experiments, such as the Skittles experiment watching the colours dissolve, mixing bicarbonate of soda with food colouring and watching food colouring floating on milk repel from dish soap. The children made predictions and observations from the scientific explorations.Â
This week was very exciting and eventful. The theme of the week leading up to World Book Day was Alice in Wonderland. Throughout the week the children were learning about the story, particularly the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. The children used their phonics knowledge to write out party invitations for the tea party and worked together to create iced fruit tea, using some herbs harvested from the herb garden. The children also performed a dance routine storytelling Alice in Wonderland to the rest of the school. We are so proud of the children for being brave and fantastic on stage. There was also a costume parade on World Book Day, everybody looked amazing. What a fun week!
Welcome back children and families, we hope you had a marvellous half term break. This half term in the curriculum unit we are answering the question 'Where in the World?" The focus of the week is naming and describing different modes of transport, understanding what a journey is and the children talking about their experiences travelling to near and far places. During story time the children have been listening carefully to stories about transport and journeys inlcudinng Emma Jane's Aeroplane and Rosie's Walk. In Maths we have been comparing numbers using vocabulary 'more than', 'fewer than' and is equal to.Â
Remember next week is World Book Day, please dress up as your favourite book character.
This week we have continued learning about the Three Billy Goats Gruff and used a story map to retell and imitate the story. The children worked so hard and wrote fantastic captions. In Maths we have been learning about five and a bit numbers exploring the composition of 6 and 7. On Tuesday it was Internet Safety Day, and the children discussed using tablet devices safely. Following the children's interests we have been learning about what happens to nature during the winter and how to look after plants.
This week was Children's Mental Health Week, and the theme was 'Know Yourself, Grow Yourself'. This week, we have been getting to know ourselves by celebrating what we like, our personalities, and what we are good at. The children were very respectful listening to each other share their ideas. We are so proud of the children for learning how to retell 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' orally. They worked hard making a wanted poster about the troll writing simple captions. In Maths the children have continued to explore the composition of five and are now exploring six. In continuous children were being very creative creating domino structures, story maps and puppets.
This week has been so much fun. We have been learning about the Lunar New Year. To celebrate we ate noodles (which symbolises a long life) and joined with nursery for a Dragon Dance Parade. It was so interesting learning about the traditions of this celebration. In Literacy we are learning about a different traditional tale 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' and answering questions about the text. In Maths we have been partioning five into parts and starting to learn number facts.
This week the children have been learning how to set goals in their play and learning and be determined to acheive them. One of this week's goals was to create a story map about the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood'. The children were fantastic at using the story language to help them recall key events from the story and sequence it. Another goal was to learn how to order the numbers 1 to 5 and use maths talk to explain how they know the sequence of numbers. On Tuesday we had a special visitor from the fire brigade who delivered a workshop about fire safety to us. The children listened so politely to the fire fighter, this helped them revisit learning from the previous curriculum unit.
We are so proud of how hard the children have worked this week. The children have continued learning about Little Red Riding Hood retelling the story with words and actions, answering recall questions with their learning partner and they used this knowledge to write short captions about an event from the story. In Mastering Number this week we have practised subitising numbers to 6 and used positional language to describe the arrangement of numbers. We have been learning how to sing 'Pat-a-cake' in music and finding the pulse of music. During circle time, we have been discussing never giving up when facing a challenge. In provision the children have been set both group and individual challenges such as retelling Little Red Riding Hood, building a house of grandma and fine motor cutting skills.
Please return phonics and library books on Thursday so they can be changed. Thanks for your continued support.
Happy New Year from R Goodall. It has been lovely welcoming the children back after the holiday. They have settled back into school marvellously.
This week, we started our new curriculum unit, 'Traditional Tales,' where we have been focussing on retelling Little Red Riding Hood through oral rehearsal and story actions. The children had the challenge of writing to describe the Big Bad Wolf using their phonic knowledge. In Maths, we have learned how to recognise numerals and make numbers to match the number.Â
During continuous provision, the children were fascinated by the winter nature. Plenty of time this week was spent exploring and observing frost, ice, cold weather and funghi. We found earthstars and enjoyed watching the spores spread.Â
