Botulism (Kara Quinn)
Reservoir (Espelund & Klaveness, 2014)
toxic anerobic bacilli spores from C.botulinum that can be found in things such as : soil, dust, decomposed plants, algae, infected animals/fish/invertebrates, and rivers
Portal of Exit(Medicine, 2020)
vectors
touch
spores travel by air
Mode of Transmission (CDC, 2024)
inhaling
ingestion
entering wound
iatrogenically (botox treatments)
Portal of Entry(Medicine, 2020)
vectors (invertebrates,animals,fish)
inhilation- spores travel in wind
ingestion - of vectors, contaminated food
direct inoculation (ex: spores enter into open wound)
Suseptibility of Host (Mayo Clinic, 2024)
any one or thing can be infected but especially young children/immunosuppressed people since they have a weak immune system
How can we control spread of Botulism?
there are vaccines for botulism (Jeffery, 2023)
more common for large animals
have vx for humans but isn't widley used so botulism doesnt build resistance to it
proper food preparing and handling (Jeffery, 2023)
cooking canned food with heat for appropriate amount of time
getting rid of "bludging" cans
keep wounds clean (Mayo Clinic, 2024)
avoid giving raw honey to children under a year old (contains spores),( Mayo Clinic,2024)
