At Mangōnui School we follow the Better Start Literacy Approach where the tamariki learn the sound a letter (or letters) make. They learn to read each focus sound and words that contain them. They also learn to spell the words with this focus sound. Each week your child will read one book which is broken up into a few pages each day. We spend lots of time reading and making words before we read each section as well as unpack what is happening in the story to ensure tamariki have an understanding of the story too.

Below are sound cards of each focus sound. You can use these to help support your child at home. Get your child to say the focus sounds and see if they can read and write some of the words that contain the sound as well. As your child progresses the sounds become more complex and involve two or three letters that together, make one sound. Click on the website to read more about BSLA.
