How to Find an Internship?
Think about your field of interest and browse the internship database which includes information and contacts for local businesses who have expressed interest in participating in the MHS program. You may also explore personal or family contacts for an internship if you would like.
Contact potential internship sites early, make sure they understand their responsibilities to you, as well as yours to them.
Verify that site supervisor can provide the amount of time and the appropriate work for your needs. Be sure your employer understands the time requirements and their obligation to accurately hold you accountable.
Discuss with site supervisor their expectations regarding your performance, demeanor, attire, etc.
Make your site supervisor aware of any obligations such as Athletics and Advanced Placement examinations that alter the hours or days available for your participation; you should plan for these conflicts long before your Senior Internship begins.
Phone - In person Interview:
Ask your potential site supervisor specific questions that will help you both be clear about your expectations and daily responsibilities.
Ask questions that give you a picture of what a typical day will be like….you don’t want to be three weeks into your internship and find out that you will be filing papers for most of your day.
Ask your potential site supervisor if you will be meeting with them daily/weekly or if someone else will be mentoring you. You want to be sure you will have appropriate supervision and will be given enough to do over the 6 weeks.
Policies of the Internship Program:
Students cannot get any financial payment
Students cannot work for family, under the supervision of family, or for the company of your family. The relationship must be independent.
Students cannot work out of a home (or their home), they must go to a physical work site. VIRTUAL/REMOTE INTERNSHIPS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.
Students must be academically cleared to attend their internship, passing all classes.
Students must intern during the entire time frame (May 13 – June 13, 2024) to complete the program.
How to Secure your Internship:
The electronic contract (found on the MHS Internship app) must be filled in by you and your parent/guardian. Once the electronic piece is completed, it will automatically generate a paper form that requires four signatures from 1) You, 2)your parent/guardian, 3) internship site supervisor, 4)guidance counselor.
Every student must meet with their guidance counselor to get cleared academically for the internship with their signature.
The contract is then submitted to Ms. Rothman at the Internship Office (Palmer side, next to Mr. Chabot's classroom).
April 12, 2024 is the final deadline for contracts to be submitted.
Important Things to Remember:
Monday-Friday, 6 hours/day are required to complete the internship.
We will be doing site visits throughout the internship. We are expecting a great report from each supervisor and the intern should be available to welcome the MHS representative.
