Best Fit Face Mask

In my quest to find a pattern and directions for making face masks, I discovered the "Better Fit Face Mask" by Brittany Bailey, a female wood worker who wanted a washable, adjustable and comfortable form fitting mask to use in her shop. Brittany's PDF containing the directions and pattern can also be found at https://www.prettyhandygirl.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Better-Fit-Face-Mask-Downloadable-Instructions.pdf and her movie showing how to make it can be found at https://youtu.be/-t_Gz3lGwF8

When making masks, I wanted ear straps that are comfortable and adjustable. I found on Amazon 50 Yard 1/4 Inch Wide Elastic String Cord Bands Rope for Sewing Crafts (1/4 inch 50 Yards) and Moosth Cord Locks Silicone Toggles (by Ukolili) for adjusting the cords. You can find both black and white toggles on Amazon.

I use 100% cotton quilting fabric. Brittany's medium pattern seems to fit most adult women and men. To fit children, I reduce the pattern about 10% (reducing the pattern about 1/4 " all around).

On my YouTube video I explain how I also make nose pieces and the type of filters that can be used to make the masks with 4 layers when a filter is added to the inside pocket. My video can be found here:

Health care interns

Makersmiths is hosting health care interns from Shenandoah University this summer who are helping us assemble face shields for COVID-19 first responders and health care workers. This is an example of a mask I made for them to say thank you for helping us.

In the Wind

I made some Aboriginal wind turbine printed masks for friends at JMU who coordinate KidWind initiatives for Virginia.

Fit Your Personality

OK, if we have to wear masks during this pandemic, why not make masks that fit your personality?
