Let's get to know each other and start talking about our experiences planning, working at, or attending festivals! We'll share strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and strategies related to the four pillars of the Art of Mass Gatherings: safety, sustainability, accessibility, and community engagement.
By the end, each person should have at least one idea to enhance safety, accessibility, sustainability, or community engagement that they plan to enact in their events/organization.

Introduction to sustainable solutions for event design:
Mack Coyle, CEO of Coyle Solar, leads a demo and session on working with solar power at events
Matthew Kowal, Co-Founder of Majestic Collaborations, leads a session on waste reduction design including composting, water, and other sustainability considerations
Jennifer Pickering, Executive Director of LEAF Global Arts, shares lessons and facilitates a conversation on cultivating partnerships, even in the most unexpected places.

Several arts, culture, event, and emergency professionals provide their perspective and insight into preparedness and resilience, covering topics of interest to them ranging from:
Local and national preparedness initiatives and resources
Intersections between event production and broader community emergency preparedness
Specific challenges to event safety / situational awareness for event producers
How communities can protect their arts and cultural heritage
Things that arts, culture, and event organizations can or should do to prepare themselves or their audiences and communities to mitigate, respond to, or recover from potential hazards
How to shape one's event through a preparedness, rather than reactionary lens
A brief Q&A panel discussion follows exploring intersections across their work!

The Majestic Collaborations approach, facilitated by Bertrand Evans-Taylor
An Arts & Cultural Resilience Asset (ACRA) Map documents the physical infrastructure, capacities, and knowledge stewarded by local arts, culture, and event industries. It helps identify tangible and intangible arts and cultural resources worth protecting and also maps how local people and organizations can contribute to community resilience, especially as places seek to fortify themselves against natural disaster.
3:00 pm - 3:50 pm (50 minutes)
Facilitated by Richard Cadena, Leigh Maher (LEAF Festival), Otto Vasquez (LEAF Festival) and Daryl Law (Jennette's Pier / NC Aquarium).
Participants for this section are divided into groups of about 10 people as they rotate through four sets of tours and learning stations. This session looks at accessibility, safety, and factors at the intersection of the two when it comes to event planning and design.

Presented by Cucalorus and the Dare County Arts Council, this three-day celebration of coastal North Carolina marine culture is coming to the Outer Banks on September 18-21, 2022!
