Our term 3 was packed full of experiences and events this year! Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, senior formal, special olympics basketball, Waiora whānau evening, and international day to name a few!
It has also been a term of changes and new beginnings. Term 3 has been our first term in our new purpose built space, and we are absolutely loving it! Along with our new build has come some staffing changes; these being the appointment of Miss Percy as a full-time teacher in Waiora, and the welcoming of two new superstar learning assistants, Melissa and Megan.

Waiora
Being in our new building has been life changing for our students, as we now have a purpose built space specifically designed for them. Our new space features accessible bathrooms, a sensory room, a breakout space, two large flexible learning spaces, a full kitchen, a resource room, and an office for staff use. We also have a large outdoor area in which we have been enjoying playing basketball and some gardening. Check out the video Miss Percy took on the day her and Miss Wackwitz finished up organising and decorating the space.
Welcome to Waiora Whanau Evening
At the beginning of the term, Miss Wackwitz organised a whānau evening to reconnect, share kai, and showcase our new space to Waiora whānau. It was a great time to come together and korero, especially after the previous COVID restrictions. Miss Wackwitz was able to use our new shared space inside Waikākāriki to deliver a presentation to whānau and award students with their Maths Buddy certificates to recognise their consistent efforts and mathematic achievement.
This term Miss Percy worked closely with students on a range of arts based projects and activities.
Some students engaged in sensory art experiences, experimenting with paints, pastels, pencils and a variety of tools and mediums. Students also worked on self portraits, exploring their own sense of identity through creativity and experimentation of media.
Miss Percy also worked on a design and visual communication based "passion project" with some of our students, in which students followed a design process into creation of a final outcome. One of our talented students designed his own fashion brand and used bleach painting to create designs on clothing.
Some of our senior students had an awesome night at the Year 12 & 13 Formal. This year the venue was the beautiful Ilex Event Centre in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Featuring some great food, slick dance moves, and an awesome vibe, the event was certainly a night to remember.
Nearing the end of the term, a team of 11 students from Waiora represented Mairehau High School at the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament.
This tournament was held at Pioneer Recreation Sports Centre, where our Waiora team went head to head against many other Supported Learning Teams around Canterbury.
By the end of the day, Waiora came away with the bronze! The team was stoked to achieve third place and they were able to make plenty of memories.
Waiora students displayed skills such as team work, discipline, perseverance and commitment.
Despite the weather, Waiora students still had a fun filled Mairehau High International Day this year!
Miss Wackwitz put on a range of activities and games celebrating the day, giving students the opportunity to learn about different cultures around the word.
Miss Percy shared her Italian heritage with Waiora and made homemade pizza with a group of students.
Later on, students went and checked out the range of food trucks and the day ended on a high note watching all the amazing cultural performances in a full school assembly.
