Despite many disruptions to normal school life, (such as the outbreak of Omicron, many staff and students off sick, and being in the midst of a construction site) we still managed to engage in a lot of key learning experiences, and also a lot of fun!
This year, a few of our students have taken up "apprenticeships" helping our wonderful caretaker Joff keep our kura beautiful and clean. These students are also learning valuable trade skills as Joff teaches them how to fix and maintain different equipment around the school.
Pictured above, a group of Waiora students took initiative to tackle some of the mess around the school.
All of our students have been cooking up a storm this year! Everything from baking cookies, to perfecting poached eggs, and cooking spaghetti bolognaise!
Science has also been a major highlight for our students so far this year. Alongside Miss Mason, the students of Waiora have had multiple opportunities to engage in exciting hands-on experiments!
During Term 2 we were able to visit the Careers Expo. This has inspired many of our students to think about the different opportunities they have when they finish school. The NZ Army display was a big hit!
We have a lot of students with creative talent in Waiora, and Miss Percy got stuck in to a lot of arts, crafts, and design projects with these students over the two terms. These students spent a lot of time learning about the process of design and were able to experiment freely with their ideas.

To celebrate Matariki this year, the whole school participated in a special day of events and Māori traditions.
The students of Waiora were actively involved and excited to celebrate the Māori New Year, and can be seen practicing the Haka (top right)
During Term 2, Waiora was very proud to announce that some of our students would be playing the halftime at the Crusaders semi! Their exclusive team has been making headlines, with some of our students featuring on channel One News! The last part of Term 2 has been very busy as we pack and plan for the move into our new building. Waiora students have welcomed the change and have been working hard to help the staff get organized for the move. In week 9 we had a farewell hot chip lunch (pictured below) to say goodbye to Simon for term 3 as he goes on placement (returning term 4), and also a farewell to Sonya (returning to Auckland) who will be greatly missed by all students and staff.
Our new center will bring along new opportunities, more resources, and most of all lots of open space for our learners.
See you all in Term 3!
Waiora staff and a team of movers have cleared out the whare on the first day of week 10!
Saying goodbye to the Whare!
