Transportation to Sorting Facility:
Once plastic waste has been collected from our core collection areas, barges will return to the docks where cranes can unload the Universal Containers. After unloading, these containers are shipped to the sorting facility by trucks and/or trains.
Sorting Facility Process:
As the containers arrive at the Sorting Facility, they are unloaded, and put into incoming storage. The sorting process is as follows:
1. Volunteer sorting to remove non-plastics (i.e., wood, paper, garbage, etc.)
2. Density sorting to separate different types of plastic.
3. Second volunteer sorting to finish separate plastics and offload into bins.
4. Clean dirty plastics and dry using a process similar to a car wash.
5. Process plastics for manufacturers (i.e., shredding, melting, etc.)
6. Package plastic for shipment.
Ship to Manufacturers:
After plastic is packaged, it is placed in outgoing storage where it can be purchased by and shipped to manufacturers. These manufacturers would then turn the collected and sorted plastic into building materials.
We wanted to make an impact in our community. We hosted two recycling drives in schools and offices from around the Helena area. We created collection bins as well as informational posters to educate participants on how to handle plastic after use. After collection, we sorted the plastic into four groups (reusable plastic, non-reusable plastic, plastic bottles, and plastic bags) and recorded data on our collections. We collected and sorted over 1347 pieces of reusable plastic! Then, we sent our plastic recycling to Trex for reuse.
Many thanks to our sister teams, Nuclear and Micro, for their help with sorting!
