In order to make the greatest impact with our collected plastic, we decided to turn it into building and housing materials. Millions of people could benefit from these plastic-based building products. Team Nano's Plas-tastic House consists of several plastic-based materials, such as: insulation, concrete, manufactured stone veneer, decking, lumber/framing, and roofing. Insulation uses hard, pellet-shaped plastic which is spun into thin fibers, similar to cotton candy. Plastic can be used as a filler and base material in both concrete and manufactured stone veneer; plastic roofing is made of melted and tightly compressed plastics. Decking, lumber, and framing follows a similar process with the addition of recycled sawdust. These plastic materials are durable, weather-resistant and low maintenance, enhancing their functionality as compared to traditional products.
