HW: WebAssign O1
Tuesday 3/31: Check for understanding of Faraday's Law, Use the equation for Faraday's Law to explain the negative sign (Lenz's Law), Try a few examples to explain Lenz's Law, Using the last example of an increasing/decreasing currrent in a wire that creates a changing magnetic field in a rectangular loop of wire to explain Lenz's Law--Now do objective # 2 to show that you get a natural logarithm in the answer for the magnetic flux in the loop, Introduce Lab Activity with electromagnetic induction in a solenoid that has a magnet plunged in or taken out of the solenoid, finish activity, trun in activity,
HW: WebAssigns O1 & O2 (stick to the due dates!)
Wednesday 4/1 (1/2 Period): Discuss Motional EMF, Do example of moving a rectangular loop of wire in and through a magnetic field-Graph Magnetic flux vs. time & EMF vs. time for this case, Do Lenz's Law Practice
HW: WebAssign O1 (Due Thursday 4/2 @ 4:00 PM), O2 (Due Tuesday 4/7 @ 8:20 AM)
Thursday 4/2: Finish Objectives for Unit O, Discuss time derivatives for Faraday's Law, Discuss Induced Eelctric Field (Faradian Loops)--Similar to Gauss's Law & Ampere's Law), Demos for EM Induction,
HW: WebAssign O1 (Due Thursday 4/2 @ 4:00 PM), O2 (Due Tuesday 4/7 @ 8:20 AM)
Friday 4/3: No Classes!
Monday 4/6 (1/2 period): Finish up Unit O objectives, Do 2 demos to apply EM Induction, "Leaping Ring" Demo, EM Braking Demo, Discuss the 2 demos and realize how to use the principle of Electromagnetic Induction to explain these demos., Time for work in Unit O packet (check answers on demo desk),
HW: Contiune to work on problems from Unit O packet (will not be collected)
Tuesday 4/7: Discuss Maxwell's Equations (write down in notebook), Discuss addition to Ampere's Law to include a displacement current--Adds idea of changing electric field creates a mgentic field--The opposite of Faraday's Law, This Symmetry is the reason why the Maxwell's gets credit for these equations!, Hand out Unit P Packets, Introduce concept of Inductance, What is an induction coil, Discuss the voltage drop/emf of an inductor (emf/change in current for the inductor), Derive the equation for the inductance of a solenoid, Partner up and answer worksheet with questions about inductors, Discuss RL Circuits, Use Kirchoff's Loop Rule to write a differential equation for the time after a switch is thrown on an RL Circuit, solve the differential equation for the LR circuit and discuss graphs and time constants, Discuss Transformers, Demos for Induction and Air Transformers
HW: WebAssign P1 & P2
Wednesday 4/8 (1/2 period): Discuss time constants and the values of the current and t= 0 & t = infinity for an RL circuit, Derive the equation the energy stored in an inductor, work on WebAssign time
HW: WebAssign P1 & P2
Thursday 4/9: Discuss resistors, capacitors, and inductors in series and parallel, Activity: Determine whether equivalent inductance is additive or reciprocal additive for inductors in series & parallel, Objective P7, Do example problem with RL circuit and 3 switches (example of how a starter motor works), Discuss how much voltage is induced on the other much bigger resistor after switch is thrown to position 3, Calculate the current at t = 0 & t = infinity, the voltage across the resistor and inductor at these times, the change in current, and the time constant, Finish by discussing the graphs of current for both stages, Discuss the last objectives on LC circuits, compare this differential equation to that of a mass connected to a spring for SHM, Derive euqation for the period of an LC Circuit (as well as for the angular frequency), Discuss the sinusoidal equation for the charge or current as a function of time, Discuss the LC circuit in terms of energy conservation
HW: WebAssign P2 & P3 are now due on Monday!, WebAssign Review is due on Wednesday morning!
