Professional Development Goals & Objectives

The need to better support the growth and development of US:IT staff to improve the retention and recruitment of talent was highlighted as a key area of need. A total of (3) Goals and (16) discrete objectives have been identified to promote US:IT professional development.

5.1. US:IT will attract and retain a highly talented and efficient workforce

  • 5.1.1 Develop a comprehensive, unit specific on-boarding and off-boarding procedure for all staff, including training and security access approval requirements
  • 5.1.2 Collaborate with Human Resources and appropriate bargaining unit representatives to identity strategies to retain highly talented and efficient IT staff
  • 5.1.3 Ensure annual performance assessments include a current personal mission statement developed by the individual which aligns with at least one US:IT strategic goal
  • 5.1.4 Establish a formal staff recognition program for employees who contribute effort to US:IT projects
  • 5.1.5 Facilitate Help Desk Institute Customer Service Representative training for Help Desk staff


5.2 US:IT will be an organization that develops and empowers employees

  • 5.2.1 Develop and propose a formal framework to promote, coordinate and manage external professional development opportunities for US:IT Staff
  • 5.2.2 Facilitate engagement in annual scholarship activities including conference presentations and publications
  • 5.2.3 Develop framework to coordinate, support and promote employee mentorship opportunities to foster skill-building for future promotion or succession
  • 5.2.4 Sponsor annual meeting of the Women in US:IT group to forge relationships, discuss issues, and expand collaboration opportunities
  • 5.2.5 Develop and implement a decision-making framework to promote delegated decision-making authority to team leads and/or managers to improve processes and enhance efficiency


5.3 US:IT will establish an information hub for IT training and documentation

  • 5.3.1 Establish an accessible, searchable repository of professional development and training materials to be made available to the UMS community
  • 5.3.2 Establish a MyCampus portal link to provide readily available and searchable training documentation for student help desk workers to reduce hold times and improve incident resolution
  • 5.3.3 Establish framework to engage with internal units to provide relevant security training for all employees
  • 5.3.4 Develop a data-orientation program for new hires to improve awareness of available data resources and best practices
  • 5.3.5 Establish a formal project documentation framework template to promote change management and information dissemination
  • 5.3.6 Develop self-service training modules to promote best practices for data querying and handling
