Providing greater opportunity to leverage data as a strategic asset across the UMS was identified as a key area of growth and need for US:IT. A total of (1) Goal and (7) discrete objectives have been identified to help foster a data-driven culture.
Data Goals & Objectives
6.1. US:IT will engage with the University community to establish a culture of data-informed and responsive decision making
6.1.1 Partner with UMS departments and functional areas to develop a comprehensive data dictionary to fully document source data used for reports and provide accessible data definitions
6.1.2 Establish framework to ensure data is properly classified, securely stored, and accessed with well-managed rights so that the data resources are appropriately available to business units
6.1.3 Develop and pilot a complete data mart project consisting of a Microsoft SQL server database, a Talend-based data integration process and a Microsoft Power BI driven reporting front end for end user access
6.1.4 Establish a cross-functional team to develop a framework for leveraging the Splunk service to identify resource needs and inform service improvement opportunities
6.1.5 Partner with UMS Stakeholders to develop, promote and support system-wide Data Governance
6.1.6 Acquire and implement a new Business Intelligence tool for student, human resources, and finance data to replace the retiring Discoverer tool and create a new reporting platform for end users in all databases
6.1.7 Develop capacity to provide robust predictive & prescriptive data analytics models for campus and functional office decision-making support
