Social science research is the systematic investigation, observation, and analysis of many forms of social behavior and meaning-making. Research methodologies for the investigation of social phenomena can be quantitative, which generally include surveys or experiments, and/or qualitative, which can include interviewing, focus groups, and ethnography, among other methods. Data analysis varies by method, but often includes some form of statistical analyses, qualitative coding, or conversation and discourse analyses.
Research engagement includes participating in these kinds of research projects at different levels of involvement. At the introductory course level, research engagement means taking part in a research study (e.g., an online survey, a focus group, or an interview) as a participant. In upper-level courses, it may mean participating as a member of the research team conducting the study, and eventually, planning and conducting your own research.
