Specter Moose
What is Specter Moose?
Specter Moose is a literary and art magazine featuring creative work by UMA students, as selected by an editorial board also composed of UMA students. The magazine was founded in Fall 2022 by a group of students and their faculty advisor, Professor Noel Tague. The purpose of the magazine is to showcase and create community around UMA students’ creative work, while also giving interested students the opportunity to hone their editing, design, and professional communication skills while working on a magazine.

What is a Specter Moose?
Since its first sighting in 1891 by an avid outdoorsman in Piscataquis County, Maine, the Specter Moose has become an elusive legend of enormous proportions. The Specter Moose reportedly stands over fifteen feet tall, weighs over two thousand pounds, and is said to emit a glowing aura of soft white light. Unlike an albino moose, this larger, luminous creature cannot be killed by bullets and is seemingly unaffected by the passage of time. Despite decreased sightings in the 21st century, the Specter Moose has cemented itself as a local legend around Lobster Lake for almost one hundred years.
Much like the legendary Specter Moose, our literary magazine appears only once a semester to showcase luminous works of art, photography, prose, and poetry by UMA students. In every issue of Specter Moose, we hope you'll find a mix of beauty and wonder and maybe a little mystery, too—like the momentary flash of a glowing white moose among the trees.
