The Certificate of Excellence Award is given to students who have performed at the highest level in their discipline. These awards are given by the School of Business faculty to recognize the superior academic accomplishments of our students.

What experience (i.e. class, professor, student group/team etc.) has impacted you the most during your time at USM and why?
"While at USM, I have experienced many positive things that have helped propel me in my studies. While I have had many professors that have left a lasting impact, I feel as though Bert Smoluk helped me find a whole new confidence in myself. While taking his Investment Management class in the 2024 fall semester, I was pushed to bring out the best version of myself. While facing challenging content and a difficult investing project, I knew I had to buckle down and spend a lot of time outside of class studying. After visiting every one of Professor Smoluk's office hours, I worked harder than I ever had. He was there to help me and support me. Even push me to believe in myself, rather than doubt my abilities, just because of the difficult content. I was able to walk away from that class with so much knowledge, that I have found myself applying in the real world when asked finance questions by family members and friends."
After graduation, Melandi would like to get experience in the field of finance. She is not specifically set on one job title, but she would like to explore. After she gains more experience, she may go for her master's or certain certifications.

Emma joined Hannaford Supermarkets as a full-time Deli/Bakery Category, Merchandising, and Pricing Assistant after her Home Office internship in the summer of 2024. Her career goal is to become a Category Analyst or Demand Planning Analyst on the same team!

After graduation, Jacob will start his new job at the Maine Celtics and continue to pursue a successful career in sports.

What experience (i.e. class, professor, student group/team etc.) has impacted you the most during your time at USM and why?
"My experience as a student leader for the USM Outdoor Adventures Board has had a significant impact on me during my time at USM. I have been a part of the board for all four years, spending the first two as the Marketing Chair and the second two as the Executive Chair. Not only did I have the chance to participate in many fun trips and meet some of my closest friends, but I also gained valuable professional skills that will benefit my career."
After graduating this May, Josie will spend the summer leading children in grades 6-9 on backpacking trips in California for the company Overland Summers. Once that adventure concludes, she hopes to land a marketing and development job within the outdoor recreation industry.

What experience (i.e. class, professor, student group/team etc.) has impacted you the most during your time at USM and why?
"Investment Management, Applied Business Modeling, and Macroeconomics have all significantly impacted me. Investment management taught me various fundamentals of investing that I use often in my personal life. Applied Business Modeling helped me understand the unique tools Microsoft Excel has to offer, which I use at my job often. Macroeconomics with Professor Cauvel taught me so much about economic history, tradeoffs, and the psychology of spending. These are all topics I refer to frequently."
After graduation, Ben plans to work in banking.

After graduation, Dane plans to continue into the MBA program to deepen his understanding of business strategy, leadership, and organizational effectiveness. His career goal is to enter a management or consulting role where Dane can contribute to solving complex business challenges and help drive operational improvements.
