MPH Foundational Competency #1
Interpret results of data analysis for public health research, policy or proactive (Evidence-Based Approaches of Public Health, #4)
This competency will be addressed by examining data collected from Bell and Coryell county’s health databases. The data will then be interpreted using Microsoft excel to generate a graph and report. This report will be used to determine if expansion into the two counties is necessary based on epidemiological data. Information collected from a community interest survey will also be analyzed using Excel to create a report on community interest, which will help in determining if there is interest in the community for HealthStart’s intervention as well.
Goal #1: To develop the skills required to interpret city and community data into a report.
Objectives: By end of this internship experience I will have:
- 1a: Created at least 2 graphs displaying descriptive statistics based on data from cities and communities in the state of Texas.

Once cities have been identified I will gauge community interest through the use of a predeveloped survey. This will also help in identification of possible community partners that can aide the organization.
Goal #2: To develop analytical skills necessary in determining a community’s needs and capacities.
Objectives: By the end of the internship experience, I will have:
- 2a: Identified 2 cities in Texas that would benefit from HealthStart’s programs based on my assessment of environmental and health data.
