Hi everyone! My name is Sophia Grimm. I am a junior Communication Sciences and Disorders major with the goal of becoming a speech-language pathologist. I am also minoring in Spanish.
I have always been interested in learning languages and about the different ways that people communicate. Over the past few years, in many of my classes, I have also been introduced to the importance of cultural competence in healthcare and how it relates to the profession of speech-language pathology. Therefore, for this project I wanted to further explore the relationship that exists between language, culture, and healthcare. Specifically, I am going to examine this relationship from the perspectives of both Spanish-speaking cultures and Deaf culture or the Deaf community. I chose these two populations, in particular, because over the years I have taken a variety of Spanish classes, and at Nazareth, I have been able to take a few American Sign Language classes as well.
