Shifting her focus from soccer to track in college, Alexa found quick success in the sport. With this, she has been able to compete at the highest level of competition for her age group starting at NCAA Nationals to USA National Championships.
Listen to how these experiences helped form her ideas of why there is a disconnect between the sport and the public.
Being an athlete who has been at all levels, Alexa understands coverage, or in this case, the lack of it. Just like in her coaching, she believes that to get people engaged there needs to be an understanding of the sport. Understanding of why some race or meet is important and what the results mean for that athlete or the rest of the field.
This lack of understanding is seen even more prominently within women's results and competition. Alexa discussed how even the best female may not even be top 10 for male performances. This fact is what she believes drives more attention for male coverage. To round out the conversation, we discussed how the US is odd as women in both distance and sprint events have been relevant, or even dominated the World Championship scene. Compared to the US men, the US women's team is much deeper when compared to the world, so why do they lack the same coverage from their own nation?
