Baseball Field Infield and Grass Maintenance

Our baseball field's infield has been affected by wet conditions creating weed overgrowth and drainage issues. For the past year, we have contracted with a turf management company to regrade, add sandy loom and other water absorbing substances, and control weed growth on the infield to reestablish the appropriate surface needed for the infield.

Baseball Field Drainage

The elevation of the field created a crown near the center of the infield and pitcher's mound creating a drainage problem near 1st base. The turf management company has graded and created a more level surface to allow for appropriate drainage of the area.

For the past two baseball seasons, our baseball team has been forced to play its games at the City of Nitro Little League field. The spring season brings wet conditions frequently to our area. The current elevation of the field created a drainage issue near the 1st base and dugout area. Previous installation of French drains did not resolve the problem. Elevation and survey studies conducted suggested regrading of the field could improve the condition. Our baseball coach, players, and parents have conducted fundraising activities, and clean up days to improve the condition of the field. The school contracted this past year with a certified turf management company who began working on the field regrading the crown, improving the soil condition of the infield, adding fill and Sandy Loom to establish soil conditions which will absorb water. The turf management company has regularly mowed, aerated, applied weed control, and conducted over seeding to improve the field conditions so that our baseball team may return to play on their home field. This project is ongoing and currently has resulted in over $4,985.00 in expenditures.

The AJMS athletic field house is over 25 years old. It has been in need of a face lift for several years. Before any work could be completed, the field house required upgrading of its electrical wiring. Beginning in summer 2019, the field house has undergone several improvement projects to enhance the overall appearance and safety of the building. Upgrades include new electrical wiring, installation of drywall and ceilings, and LED lighting throughout the building. All interior locker rooms and restrooms were painted after installation of the new ceiling. Restrooms received a face lift which included plumbing, painting of partitions, and lighting improvements. Additionally, the concession stand utilized by our parents for fundraising during athletic events was painted, received a new freezer, and new counter tops and lighting. When the weather warms in the spring, the interior will receive a new epoxy floor. This project is nearing completion and has resulted in expenditures of $48,260.00.

The interior concession stand serving athletic events held in the gymnasium received upgrades this fall in time for the season opener of basketball. Our school is nearing 50 years old, and the color scheme, counters, ceiling tiles, flooring, and equipment were becoming outdated. Our concession stand received new ceilings, flooring, and counter tops. The room received a fresh coat of paint and a brand new refrigerator and freezer! The project was completed in November 2019 at a cost of $4,603.00.

Baseball Dugouts and Field House Painting

In the fall of 2019, the baseball dugouts and field house were painted in preparation for the 2020 baseball season. The project is on hold this winter due to weather, but will be completed in time for baseball at an estimated cost of $7,000.00.

Roofing in Need of Replacement

The roofing on both dugouts and the field house need replaced. Fundraising efforts are needed to install metal roofing on all three buildings. Estimates are being solicited.

Concrete Pad and Installation of Bleachers Needed

Our school has purchased and received shipment of two sets of aluminum bleachers for the baseball field. We are need of donations/volunteers to install two concrete pads to secure the bleachers.

Home Softball Field Needed

Our softball team does not have a home field. Our team has used the Nitro High School softball field for several years. We currently have a small baseball field that does not meet regulation play for softball due to size. It is a long term goal of the school/athletic community to upgrade and extend the field in order to permit our softball team to have their own home field. The athletic director is working with various companies to obtain project estimates.
