Singlehood is a rising phenomenon across the globe. Most people will spend significant periods of their lives living alone and without a romantic partner. Until now, research and policy-making has not focused on the challenges inherent in a single life. The International Singles Studies Association is a group of researchers around the world working on the challenges, complexity, and diversity of single life, and this space draws together these findings, promotes the association's events and conferences, and invites networking and collaboration among everyone exploring singlehood.
Established in 2023, the International Singles Studies Association includes over 100 academics based in world-leading universities from North America, Europe, Israel, India, Australia, and Taiwan. We recognize all single people’s human right to safety and dignity, social inclusion, equality, and respect, and aim to dispel assumptions, stigma, and prejudice against anyone based on their relationship or parental status.
Research—drawing together existing findings and supporting new studies intended to improve the equality, equity, well-being, respect, and inclusion of single people everywhere.
Engagement—bringing together, connecting, and supporting global experts, researchers, creatives, advocates, and all stakeholders to identify and discuss singlehood. In addition, we aim to offer conferences, workshops, training, writing retreats, and resources to members and the public.
Practice—using research to deliver evidence-based training and teaching and develop workplace and government policy regarding singlehood across the globe.
Creativity—support and promote collaborations and explorations of singlehood through the arts and the media.
