FAQ related to the Psi Chi/Psychology Club
What is the difference between Psi Chi and the Psychology Club?
Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in Psychology. It is a nationally recognized organization with eligibility requirements, including GPA minimums and completed coursework. Students must apply and be officially accepted in order to become members. Psi Chi members have access to exclusive benefits such as scholarships, leadership opportunities, national networking, and the ability to run for certain officer positions.
The Psychology Club is an inclusive student organization open to all psychology and pre-psychology majors, regardless of GPA or class standing. There is no formal application or acceptance process. Students can become active members simply by attending events, joining committees, or volunteering.
If I join Psi Chi, am I automatically a member of the psychology club, and vice versa?
Psi Chi and the Psychology Club operate as one combined organization on this campus—referred to as the Psi Chi / Psychology Club.
All psychology and pre-psychology students are welcome to be members of the Psychology Club, regardless of GPA or class standing. There is no formal application process to be considered a Psychology Club member—students can get involved by attending events, joining committees, or volunteering.
Psi Chi is the honor society component of the club. Students who meet the eligibility criteria (e.g., GPA, completed coursework) may apply for membership through the Psi Chi International Honor Society.
However, being a Psi Chi member does not automatically make you an active member of the Psi Chi / Psychology Club on this campus. For example, a student may meet the eligibility requirements and be inducted into Psi Chi nationally, but if they are not involved in any events, committees, or leadership efforts locally, they are not considered an active member of the Psi Chi / Psychology Club here.
In short:
All students can be active Psychology Club members through participation.
Psi Chi members of the international organization are encouraged to be active in the local chapter that is housed under the overall Psi Chi / Psychology Club, but eligibility and induction to the international organization alone are not enough to be considered an active member of the psychology club—one must also engage with the club on campus to be considered active member.
The two branches—Psi Chi and Psychology Club—function together under one umbrella organization led by a shared student leadership team.
After I apply and pay my dues ($60) to Psi Chi, will I be a lifetime member?
Yes. Once you join, you become a lifetime member of Psi Chi. You also have access to a digital membership certificate through Psi Chi’s Member Dashboard. From there, you can download a PDF of your certificate and even upload it as a credential to various profiles (e.g., LinkedIn).
