Assessment in Physical Education is the process of evaluating students' skills, knowledge and overall progress to inform teaching and ensure that learning objectives are being met. As a PE teacher, I will use assessments to gauge how well students are developing their motor skills, understanding of sports concepts, teamwork abilities and fitness levels. Formative assessments are ongoing evaluations that I will use during lessons to monitor students' progress and provide immediate feedback. These could include observation of students' performance during activities, quick quizzes on sports rules, or peer assessments in group work. On the other hand, summative assessments will be used at the end of a unit or semester to evaluate overall achievement, such as fitness tests, skill demonstrations or written reflections on what students learned. By using both formative and summative assessments, I can better tailor my lessons to meet students’ needs and track their development throughout the school year.
In this assignment, I practiced writing a lesson objective, selecting an appropriate formative assessment, and creating a rubric to evaluate student performance in a Physical Education lesson. First, I identified a content standard related to movement skills and wrote a clear lesson objective that included the condition, behavior, and criterion. Next, I chose a formative assessment observing students as they perform stretches to measure their ability to achieve the objective. I justified why this assessment is effective, explaining how it allows me to provide immediate feedback and track student progress. Finally, I created a rubric that aligns with the lesson objective, detailing specific criteria for stretch form, duration, and effort. This rubric will help evaluate how well students meet the objective and provide targeted feedback for improvement.
