My Educational Leadership Philosophy
My educational leadership philosophy is to foster a culture where all stakeholders feel valued, have space to grow, and work collectively towards common goals.
I believe these qualities are paramount to this philosophy:
A servant’s heart
Knowledge with continuous improvement
Self-discipline
Credibility
A servant’s heart
I believe a good leader must be a servant to those they lead. They need to listen and have compassion for all people. It is my goal as a leader to support and stand up for all people, even when they have different backgrounds and beliefs. I will also always do my best to listen before I act. By giving people a voice they become a valued member of the community. In my classroom this means getting down to the eye level of a 7 year old and giving them the voice to explain their actions. With my colleagues and committees it is listening to differing opinions and considering all options when making decisions.
Knowledge with continuous improvement
I believe a good leader is knowledgeable and adaptable (ISTE, 3.5.a., 2018). My goal as a leader is first to continue my own quest for knowledge. As we learn more about how students learn I want to have the knowledge to make changes to increase student success. Then, I will continue to support other teachers and students as they grow in knowledge and think critically and creatively (ISTE, 3.3.c., 2018).
Self-Discipline
I believe a good leader is self disciplined. They have reflective practices and accountability measures for themselves (ISTE, 3.5.c., 2018). When a leader has these things in place they are dependable and ready to support their people. Dependability is also a component of self-discipline. When you are a leader people count on you. Life may create difficult decisions, but a leader considers all angles and makes choices that show they are dependable. My goal as a leader is to continue my current habit of rising at 5am to walk and read, plan my day and reflect in my journal each night. When I am faithful to these habits I am a better teacher, coworker and leader. People can depend on me for support when I have my days planned and priorities in order.
Credibility
The final quality I believe is essential in a leader is credibility. This encompasses integrity and being principled. My goal as a leader is to live with integrity and credibility. I will honor my commitments. I will also give credit to all those who help make the team stronger. I will work with my team to set goals based on the values of that organization. Finally, when I make a mistake I will take responsibility for the results and work to make the necessary changes.
