Weight Room Facility Needs/Renovations

Original Layout of Upstairs Room (Circa 2015) - Roughly 2,750 Sq. Ft. of Space (8 Racks)

When I began teaching and coaching at Whitewater High School I had a vision for the Strength and Performance Program. I knew that if our school wanted to compete at an elite level in every sport, then we needed to learn how to do it within the confines of the weight room where we could maximize our genetic potential. However, there existed a problem. Many of our student-athletes were not in weight training during the school day. Also, the 2,750 Sq. Ft. room only had 8 power racks to service upwards of 60 athletes at a time. If you do the math, that is 7.5 student-athletes at a rack. That is not very efficient when it comes to a 50 minute class period. Not to mention, the weight equipment was bought used by the school when the high school opened in 2004. Therefore, much of the equipment was outdated and needs replacing. Lastly, the pull lifts were being dropped on an upstairs weight room. This over time can lead to a safety issue of which I was concerned. Therefore, I decided on a course of action to resolve the immediate issues and am determined to see it through and to help our student-athletes be the best they can be.

Plan/Goals for Solving Problems:

1. EDUCATE parents and student-athletes on the importance of weight training with regards to sports performance and injury reduction.

2. Develop an EXCITEMENT AND MOTIVATION for a majority of our student-athletes to be in weight training during the school day so they do not have to train outside of their already busy practice and school schedule.

3. Find more SPACE to serve the roughly 1,500 students at Whitewater High School and the close to 50-60 student-athletes in a training session. This would hopefully allow for more efficient workouts that athletes would find productive and beneficial to their improvement.

4. RENOVATE AND UPGRADE the equipment, so that student-athletes would have access to a state of the art (high school) training facility where their needs are met and they take PRIDE in taking care of it long-term.

*GOAL 1 & 2 are ongoing and continuous resolutions to the culture at Whitewater High School, and will remain as goals as long as I am at Whitewater High School.*

GOAL #3 - ACHIEVED:

After discussion with Mike Vena (Whitewater HS Athletic Director) and the current wrestling coach (Scott Smith), they both agreed to relocate wrestling to the newly built multi-purpose building (on-campus) starting in 2018-2019. Therefore, the wrestling room, which is on the 1st floor of the school and is roughly (2,200 Sq. Ft.), would become the pull/deadlifting room along with dynamic (plyometric) movements in the future. This would increase our SPACE from 2,750 Sq. Ft. to close to 5,000 Sq. Ft.
