Are books sponsored by Planned Parenthood being considered for adoption?
Recently, we’ve received several emails stating that the ETR Healthsmart textbook was associated with Planned Parenthood. We emailed the vendor and they’ve confirmed that their text is NOT associated with Planned Parenthood. Specifically, they’ve stated the following:
* ETR is an independent nonprofit research and evaluation agency.
* ETR has never been a department within or owned by any other organization. They are not now, nor have they ever been a part of Planned Parenthood OR any other organization.
* ETR is the largest recognized producer of evidence-based curriculum interventions in the country today.
* ETR produces and publishes its own programs as well as distributes curriculum and resources from other organizations that have shown effectiveness, are evidence-based, and evidence-informed.
* In amongst all of its programs and resources, ETR does distribute one evidence-based curriculum called Get Real, which is written by a Planned Parenthood affiliate. This has no affiliation to HealthSmart, nor is it part of HealthSmart.
Which books are currently being reviewed by the committee members?
The HPE Committee is currently reviewing books from 6 vendors (see the table below for the vendor's information and product name). All of the vendors except for ETR Healthsmart and US Games/OPEN have print copies of their textbooks. Some of the vendors sell their textbooks with and without ancillary workbooks. For example, Savvas Learning Company LLC will sell its Health Textbook titled “Health” with and without the ancillary workbook titled “Human Sexuality.” It is up to the HPE committee to determine which books and ancillary workbooks meet the needs of our standards and community.
What is the district’s position on abstinence?
Fayette County Public School System’s health curriculum has and will continue to emphasize that abstinence is the only truly safe measure that students can use to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
