ANSC 101 - Introduction to Animal Science
Each semester, approximately 120 students in ANSC 101 use the Sheep Unit to learn about low-stress animal handling, collecting blood samples, breeding soundness exams in rams, and pregnancy checking.
ANSC 372 - Sheep Production
This course has about 30 students per semester that become active participants in the production and management of the Sheep Unit. Students learn about the production calendar, implement the herd health protocols for the semester, lamb ewes, conduct breeding soundess exams on rams, submit samples for DNA testing, conduct financial analyses and many other activities.
ANSC 160 - Veterinary Practices
Approximately 30-40 students will assist with basic veterinary procedures around the unit.
ANSC 301 - Intermediate Animal Systems
Thirty students each semester will assist with vaccinations for lambs, docking and castration, and selection activities.
ANSC 330L - Applied Research in Animal Nutrition
Each fall, 24 students are involved in an intensive research project utilizing sheep. Students are responsible for the daily feeding and care of research animals, sample analysis in the lab and reporting the final results.
ANSC 199 and 399 - Special Topics and ANSC 389 - Internship
Students are able to enroll in special topics that can range from work experience to developing educational materials relating to sheep production. Approximatly 10 students are enrolled each semester.
Undergraduate Research Projects
Each year, 3-4 students will participate in a variety of research projects at the Chico State Sheep Unit.
All teaching and research protocols are approved and reviewed the California State University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
