The formal requirements for the Sustainability Certificate can be found in the Course Catalog. Note, this link takes you to the 2020-21 version of the Certificate. If you are following an earlier version of the certificate, similar substitutions can also be made.
NOTE: Starting Fall 2021, the Environmental Science Lecture and Lab and all the Sustainability classes changed their prefixes to ENVS (Environmental Science and Sustainability). When looking for these classes in the schedule, be sure to search on the prefix ENVS. The ENVS classes are part of a collaborative of three different departments, but ENVS classes appear in the schedule only under Engineering. That's just an artefact of the way we store our prefix information in our college database.
Review the requirements (link above).
Meet with our Counselor focused on Sustainability, as shown below.
Work with the Sustainability Counselor to develop an educational plan.
In your final semester, meet with the Sustainability Counselor to submit a certificate petition. Note: Any substitutions must be approved and signed off in the certificate petition by the Sustainability Departmental Designee, shown below.

SUST 31L - Due to shelter in place, the SUST 31L Lab is not currently being offered. We will work with students to substitute comparable course work for the SUST 31L lab. Please work with the sustainability counselors to evaluate and pre-approve an academic plan.
SUST 31: Note that BIO 31 / GEOG 31 / ENVS 31 are all equivalent to SUST 31 and will count towards SUST 31.
The same applies to the SUST 31L.
The following courses are often considered for substitute as an elective towards the sustainability certificate:
BIO 20: Introduction to Ecology
BIO 33: Introduction to Conservation Biology
ECON 22: Introduction to Environmental Economics
GEOG 1L: Physical Geography Laboratory
All academic plans are unique. If you would like to propose a different CCSF course to contribute to your sustainability coursework agenda please reach out to the Sustainability Counselors to evaluate and consider pre-approval for your proposal.
More info for SUST 91 can be found on my course info page.
