Shakespeare for actors

TH A 170 WEDNESDAYS 12:10- 3;30 pm OCEAN CAMPUS ( possibly MUB 50)

We plan to perform selections from Shakespeare for public performance with a workshop structure. 

Historical context  exploring thematic roots of comedies, tragedies and histories. Literary analysis that enriches activated verse acting.

Contemporary Shakespeare, decolonizing the cannon. Relevance for modern audiences.

Students perform and film a sonnet, monologue and an ensemble scene. Optional public performance.


Dynamic Characters built with physicality, advanced vocal skills and objective/obstacle/tactic

Course Description Beginning instruction in the use of text techniques interpreting poetic imagery and vocal exercises for the actor used in the performance of Shakespearean verse and prose. The class will develop the student's approach to address analytic skills, historical research, vocal skills and interpretive skills to perform William Shakespeare's canon. 

Methodology  We focus on text analysis and verse structure to make actionable performance choices. Performance skills include physicality, breath, projection, diction and characterization combining heightened verse with Stanislavsky techniques. These skills are combined with exploration to Shakespeare's work from a diverse, global perspective including Shakepeare in Prison ( visiting artist) ,Hip Hop Shakespeare and the Public NYC. We use filmed productions, visual archives of past shows and educational dramaturgy. Participation projects include social media Shakespeare Quarantine challenge and Shotguns Sonnets and two field trips to zoom performances by SF Shakespeare and SFSU Shelter in Shakespeare.
