Course Description

ART 103 History of Modern Art

3 units

Survey of modern and contemporary art in Europe and America from the mid-19th century through the early 21st century. Art will be discussed and analyzed from critical and historical perspectives, formal visual elements of style, and social/cultural contexts. Students will learn to identify pivotal artists, styles, and techniques and to critically analyze art within its cultural framework.

This  course  meets  requirements for  the  AA-T  in  Studio  Arts  major,  CCSF  GE  Area  E Humanities,  IGETC  Area  3  Arts,  and  CSU  GE-B  Area  C1  Arts,  as  well  as  specific  major  and general education requirements at various private and public universities. It meets the requirement for broad survey knowledge toward a B.A. degree in Art History.

Repeatability: Course is not repeatable.

Time required (units): 3 units; 52.5 lecture hours; 105 homework hours; 157.5 total hours; field trips (see also section on field trips below). The amount of time spent on homework may vary from student to student.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• SLO 1: Apply appropriate art historical terminology to analyze formal elements of design and techniques in works of modern and contemporary art.

• SLO 2: Identify and differentiate the diverse styles and concepts of modern and contemporary art.

• SLO 3: Evaluate works of art in relation to the historical, cultural, and sociological contexts in which they were created.

• SLO 4: Explain how artists of diverse backgrounds produced culturally and historically significant works.

How do I register in a class when I am on a wait list?
