The goal of this course is to provide you with an overview of the theories and research on queer psychology. We will examine the psychological experiences of LGBTQQIA++ people, incorporating the concepts of intersectionality, feminist psychology, and queer theory. We will analyze the impact of queer identity on how individuals think, feel, and behave by exploring current research and models of sexual orientation and gender identity, and the impacts of stigma and discrimination.
By the end of the course, I would like my students to be able to think critically about the issues of sexual orientation and gender diversity, and recognize and apply the issues we discuss to your everyday lives. I also hope that they will leave the course with an appreciation for the diversity of human experience, and for the similarities and differences among various sexual orientations and gender identities, and an understanding of the ways that orientation and gender are not as dichotomous as we have been taught.
Since this is an entirely online class, we will NOT be having any face-to-face meetings as a class. The course will be run entirely on Canvas, our learning management system at CCSF. That means that all course material is posted on Canvas, and all work must be submitted via Canvas.
A few days before the class starts, all students who are enrolled in the class will receive a welcome letter from me that includes instructions for logging onto Canvas.
Our class starts on ???
You will be able to log on to the course on Canvas starting ???
You must log in to the course on Canvas by the second day of class, ???. This is the equivalent of showing up on the first day of class. If you have not logged in by that date, and you have not contacted me by then, you will be dropped from the course. Online courses typically have very long waitlists, and this provides the opportunity for others to enroll.
The last date of this class is ???.
If this class is full when you try to register, please add yourself to the waitlist. If the waitlist is full, then I recommend checking back frequently (daily is best) to see if spots on the waiting list have opened up. This is the only way you will have the chance of adding to a full course before the semester starts.
Once the class has started, you may submit a Class Add Request via myRAM (it is one of the links when you open the Student Portal). Anyone still on the waitlist on the first day of class will unfortunately NOT be transferred to this Add Request list. If you are still interested in the course, you must submit a Class Add Request yourself. If I approve you to add, you will receive an email (at your CCSF email address). Then you must go into myRAM and register for the class.
