English 1A+1AS: College Reading and Composition (with Support)

MEETS IN PERSON ON OCEAN CAMPUS

Course Information

ENGLISH 1A: College reading, writing, and critical thinking with a major research component. Reading, writing, and research assignments are based predominantly on non-fiction texts. Destined to be your favorite general education requirement! Course Outline of Record

My course is oriented around the driving question: How can we know what's true?

NOTE: ENGL 1A+1AS is a six-unit course which combines ENGL 1A (a transfer-level English class) with a two-unit “co-requisite” support course (these are non-transferable units). You must be enrolled in both courses to be a part of this class. However, I will not be teaching this as two separate courses – instead, you should think of this as a single, 6-unit class. You will be exposed to the material and expectations of an ENGL 1A class immediately but be given additional support through tutoring and lots of low-stakes practice and feedback. At the end of the semester you will receive the same letter grade for both ENGL 1A and ENGL 1AS. Course Outline of Record for ENGLISH 1AS

In-Person Learning

Hooray! This section meets IN PERSON on Ocean campus MWF 9-11. Please note that we will use Canvas for all assignment submissions. The curriculum follows a weekly module format, so you can access instruction and assignments electronically if you occasionally have to miss class, and students are encouraged to bring an internet-enabled device to class to fully participate. However, this is not an online course. You are expected to attend class regularly so that we can build a vibrant and supportive learning community. Learning doesn't have to be a solitary endeavor! You will discuss material with your classmates, share your writing, give and get feedback, and ultimately learn from each other and the shared process.

Textbooks

I realize that many students have tight budgets and so I’ve tried to keep costs down; please note that you can rent used copies of our class texts for the entire semester through the CCSF Bookstore for around $20 plus tax.

Print versions are strongly recommended (you can order through the CCSF bookstore or any online retailer), but digital is an acceptable option IF you don’t mind doing a ton of screen reading AND you’re able to annotate the text.

    • They Say I Say: The Moves that Matter in Academic Writing 3rd edition, ISBN: 9780393935844

    • True Enough: Learning to Live in a Post-Fact Society by Farhad Manjoo, ISBN 9781620458402

    • Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers by Michael Caulfield (digital only, and free!)

    • Additional articles, essays, videos, and podcasts that you will access on Canvas free of charge

If you need financial support for book expenses, EOPS offers book vouchers to eligible students. For application and eligibility information, please visit the EOPS web page.
