Syllabus

Here is a sample syllabus for Math 90:

Instructor: Hal Huntsman Batmale Hall 764 hhuntsman@ccsf.edu

Welcome to Math 90. This course is designed to provide students with mathematical computation and reasoning skills that are used in many other disciplines as well as in succeeding math courses such as calculus. This course will cover exactly the same material as in a standard face-to-face Math 90 course.

Course Description

The course topics are: Real functions and their graphs; one-to-one and inverse functions; polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions; complex numbers and zeros of polynomials; linear systems and matrices; geometric transformations and conic sections; topics in discrete mathematics.

Prerequisites: Math 60 (Intermediate Algebra); and Math 50 or (geometry)

Student Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Outcome 1: Define, graph, interpret, and apply functions, their transformations, and their respective inverse functions.
  • Outcome 2: Construct functions to model and analyze real-world situations.
  • Outcome 3: Describe and graph polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions and apply their properties to solve equations and applications.
  • Outcome 4: Identify, compare, and contrast the equations, graphs, and properties of conic sections.

In addition, I have some other goals for you.

By the end of the course you will hopefully have:

  1. Become a part of the classroom community.
  2. Prepared for taking calculus in the next semester.
  3. Learned to communicate more effectively, both verbally and in writing, about mathematics.
  4. Increased your self-confidence.
  5. Seen how math can relate to your life.
  6. Taken another step toward completing your academic goals.
  7. Developed your mathematical and general analytic skills to understand the world.
  8. Grown as a person and a student of mathematics.

Required Participation

This is a hybrid class, partly online and partly face-to-face. You are required to do weekly posts in Canvas, to do homework and quizzes in WebAssign, and to come to our weekly classes on Tuesdays and turn in the written homework. I am required to drop you from the class if you do not show regular activity.

Drop Policy

Students who do not post in the forums for two weeks will be dropped from the class. Students who do not complete assignments in WebAssign for two weeks will be dropped from the class. During the first week of class, students who do not make one post in the forums and complete one homework assignment in WebAssign will be dropped from the class. Logging in and viewing the course, by itself, is NOT sufficient.

Communication

The Announcements in Canvas will be used to send general communications to the entire class. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as I create an Announcement.

For sending messages to me, use my CCSF email address: hhuntsman@ccsf.edu. I will respond to emails from you within 1 day (usually less); on weekends, within 1-3 days. Be sure to check your CCSF assigned Gmail account regularly for important information from me and from CCSF. Or you can forward your CCSF email to another email address.

Office Hours

You may also see me in person during my office hours: Mondays, 10-11 in Batmale 764; and Wednesdays, 10-11 in MUB 301 (and by appointment, which can be in person or online)

Course Web Site

Students will use the Canvas Learning Management System for assignment instructions, instructor announcements, course discussions, and viewing grades.

WebAssign and the Textbook

You will submit online quizzes and online homework in WebAssign, a site that will also have helpful videos and an electronic version of our textbook (e-book). You may prefer to also purchase a paper copy of the textbook. Enrollment in WebAssign is mandatory.

How Will You Be Graded?

We will have online discussion posts, online homework, written “turn-in” homework, quizzes (both online and in-person), five in-person exams and a Final Exam.

Discussion Forums: Forums in Canvas are where we have class discussions in an online format. Forum participation is part of your grade, and is required to remain in the class (and avoid being dropped). You will be required to make at least one forum post a week. Students who do not contribute a forum post for two weeks will be dropped.

Online Homework and Written Homework: There will be homework assignments for each section of the textbook. The online homework will mostly be in WebAssign. There will also be written homework assignments that you turn in at class each week.

Quizzes: We will have regular quizzes in WebAssign consisting of problems very similar to your homework problems. The quizzes will be timed (one hour) and you can take them at your convenience between Thursday and Sunday midnight each week. We may also have quizzes during the weekly in-person meeting on Tuesdays.

Exams: We will have four mandatory in-person exams, taken during five of our weekly class meetings. No makeup exams will be given.

Final Exam: We will have a comprehensive Final Exam, tentatively scheduled for ?????????????. If CCSF changes the date/time of the Final, it will be announced on the class web site and in class. You must be present for this exam.

Response Time for Grading

Homework and quizzes in WebAssign are graded immediately and results are posted in WebAssign. Written homework and Exams will be graded and returned to you at class the following week. Your grade for the forum posts will be available for you to check in Canvas at the end of each week

Grading:

  • Online Homework: 25%
  • Written Homework: 15%
  • Discussion Forums: 10%
  • Quizzes: 10%
  • Regular Exams: 30%
  • Final Exam: 10%

Cheating

Any student caught cheating may receive an overall grade of F for the semester.

Required Materials

You will need a scientific calculator (you may use this calculator on all exams; graphing calculators will not be allowed on exams); graph paper (all written homework with graphs must be done on graph paper); 3-ring binder (2 inch); and a pencil and good eraser!

Tutoring Assistance

CCSF has a free tutoring service, the Learning Assistance Center (LAC), located at Rosenberg Library, 2nd Floor, Room 207. Just drop in and do your homework there, and ask for help when you need it. There are computers for doing your WebAssign homework. I urge you to take advantage of this free resource.
