SOC 1 introduces you to the field of Sociology. What makes Sociology different than psychology, political science, or anthropology? While Sociology definitely uses different terminology, concepts, and theories than these disciplines, Introduction to Sociology is going to teach how you to "think" like a sociologist:
In what ways does society shape your actions or choices? A little? A lot?
How do historical events shape or influence our world today?
Why do we act the way we do? Why do we act mostly the same most of the time?
What do we "learn" from institutions like work, school, or our families?
In this course, you will gain a style of thinking called "the sociological imagination". We will then use our sociological imaginations to examine many aspects of our world like our identities, cultures, acts of crime and deviance, experiences of social inequality and various social institutions. I offer numerous opportunities so that you can reflect upon your own life and experiences using the sociological imagination.
