Remind

While working as a long-term substitute in 5th grade, one way I stayed in contact with the parents and families was through Remind. Remind allowed me to communicate with parents in a secure way. I used it to direct message a parent and to send announcements to the whole class. When sending messages over Remind, I could send pictures, videos, and direct links to websites (which was so helpful when sending google forms!). Parents often utilized the reaction button to my announcements which helped me getting a better understanding of who has read the message and it gave virtual communication more of a community feel.

Class Dojo

During my student teaching placement in a first grade classroom, I stayed in touch with parents and families frequently through Class Dojo. I used this to privately message parents on their child's achievements, send home high frequency words, and post on the class story. Class Dojo became an incredibly important tool when adjusting to remote teaching and learning.

Below are two letter which were sent to my student's homes as a way to introduce myself to the students, parents, and families. The first letter is from my year long substitute position in 5th grade. The second is from my student teaching experience in 1st grade.

Family Collaboration Assignment

Below is an assignment from my fourth grade student teaching experience in EDU 682 Math Methods. As a way to communicate with families and involve them in their child's learning, I created an assignment where they come up with fractions based on facts about the people in their family (example: 3/4 of a family are female). After the students returned the assignment as well as a survey that the parents filled out, I was able to learn about the different families in the classroom. I also reflect on the assignment and discuss changes I would make for the future.
