I believe that all students have the right to an accessible and equitable education. To support this right of my students, I work to create student-centered content and curriculum in which they can identify connections between school assignments and job/college readiness as well as see their own values and cultures represented in the literary and artistic works that they examine and analyze.
Furthermore, students should be provided with a variety of ways in which they can demonstrate competency. From writing children’s books, to creating animated stories, to designing comic-book style responses, my students have the opportunity to showcase their knowledge in varied and arts-based ways.
Lastly, students deserve to learn in a safe, positive, and inclusive learning space. On different days my classroom may look and sound: focused, chaotic, academic, energetic, rambunctious, or engaged. But it will always be a positive and safe space. My students know that I expect them to ask for help and submit work that will need revisions and improvements. They know that perfection is not the goal and that they will have opportunities to make revisions. My students know that I am there to support them, and that I am happy to see them every single time that they walk into my room.
