During my visit to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) , I came across many works of art which have shaped the manner in which I view what art is. At the museum I saw both sculpture, painting, installation and ordinary object displayed as works of art. In the galleries I slowed my pace while viewing each exhibit, looked closer at the artwork and thought deeply on how artists use color, materials, texture and form to convey emotion and/or ideas.
MoMA has provided a great model of public pedagogy as they encourage their visitors to learn by observing, interpreting and reflecting upon their individual views of the art; instead of being given one correct answer. MoMA’s learning design allowed me to travel through multiple collections and movements of art, allowing me to draw comparisons between the various artworks and my own experiences. There were so many different exhibits that there was a meaningful aesthetic experience available, demonstrating how art can lead people to be curious, creative and conversational.
This trip also made me think about the politics of museums as I pondered who’s story will be represented and how different artists express their point-of-view, and how museums shape our understanding of art and culture. As a future educator I felt a renewed sense of respect for building learning environments in which students will feel comfortable asking questions, examining multiple points-of-view and forming their own opinions. This experience also reminded me that learning can occur
Glass Bottle Installation
The use of recycled glass bottles, placed in a circle and sitting on black rocks for this sculpture, helped me reflect upon my own views on recycling and sustainability. The way these recyclables were transformed into an artistic piece, gave me a new perspective on how everyday items can be repurposed to create something beautiful.
Abstract Portrait Painting
It was the vibrant colors in this painting that captured my interest when I saw how a human face emerged from underneath layers of paint. The artwork made me realize that people have many complexities as to who they are and what their emotional state is at all times. The colors also show that we cannot always see or feel an individual's true feelings just by looking at them
The Starry Night – Vincent van Gogh
Seeing this famous painting in person was one of the many highlights of my visit. I had a very strong emotional response to both the color and motion of the brush strokes which were so much better than being able to see them through a photograph.
Fountain – Marcel Duchamp
This Artwork was one of the few examples I have encountered that has challenged my expectations by transforming an ordinary everyday item into an extraordinary work of art. The artwork also caused me to consider how the concepts behind an object, along with its historical or social context, are equally as important in defining a piece of art as is the artist's technical skills.
Reflection
Visiting MoMa helped me to understand how to be creative. Seeing all the different ways that artists create with common items made me realize that an artist's job is to make us see things differently. Seeing a lot of art created with recycled products, large amounts of color, and unconventional design made me want to explore new ways of creating with regular materials. This experience has motivated me to try new approaches when I was working on projects for my Maker Lab and that the design process includes trying out your ideas, testing them, and learning as you go.
