This was part of the Maker Cart Challenge. Alissa on our team found some slinkies on the table and immediately thought of DNA. We attempted to replicate the double helix of DNA with two fragments of the same slinky, but we quickly ran into several issues. Despite the stubborness of the spring and the weakness of the hot glue, we were able to create a model that looked more or less accurate when carefully held arms' width apart. Whether or not the model would've been better with more time or different materials, it was a great way to debate the importance of different elements of a model. We were, at first, strictly concerned with accuracy and intuitiveness, but quickly our constraints turned towards the physical and practical. The process of making revealed much about our working habits. You can see to the left three of us are working together to do hot glue surgery with popsicle sticks.
