Design Lab might be my favorite class thus far. I have always gravitated toward spaces where I am free to express my thoughts, opinions, jokes, and ideas in a creative way. The maker projects represent the kind of work that genuinely brings me joy because they allow me to tell stories while creating something unique.

PROJECT 1: LiViNG GEOGRAPHY COLLAGE

Our first project was to create a collage that represented ourselves and our living geography. So, I present to you a one of one piece created by Aaron-Moses Idowu. Follow along as I map out the concept behind it.

For this piece, I created a collage of prominent figures, both fictional and real, and connected them to different parts of Brooklyn based on where I believe their personalities would fit. The figures include Eddie Murphy, Jay-Z, Captain America, and many more. Instead of focusing only on physical location, I wanted to explore the personality, energy, and culture associated with each neighborhood.

The mental framework behind my piece goes like this: the capital of America is New York State… the capital of New York State is New York City… the capital of New York City is Brooklyn… and naturally, the capital of Brooklyn is Flatbush (home of the Mayor of Flatbush himself, Aaron-Moses Idowu).

My word is not law, guys… but my concept map should be. (lol)

Overall, this project reflects how I view identity, community, and creativity. Brooklyn is not just a place; it is a collection of stories, personalities, cultures, and experiences that shape who we are.

project 2: living geographies panel

For our Living Geographies Panel project, the task was to work collaboratively to create a group art exhibit centered around the theme of New York. This project combined traditional art with techniques from the maker lab, allowing us to design a piece that represented identity, community, and the places that shape us. I’ve had preconceived notions about group work, but I have to say, working with these two ladies made this project super enjoyable. We all contributed ideas, energy, creativity, and effort while sharing laughs and having a good time throughout the entire process.

Leading up to the presentation, we hoped this piece would resonate with viewers and create a genuine connection. Based on the live reactions, and feedback we received, I would say mission accomplished. Seeing people engage with something we created together was rewarding, and I can’t wait to see our work posted outside of the Design Lab alongside the other projects. It feels amazing knowing our piece will become part of the larger story and living geography of our community.

Project 3: Maker lesson

Here lies my attempt at a "Maker" lesson plan. I was confident in making this lesson plan because I've always had thoughts on how some lessons can seem daft, useless, and overall boring. I've often said "I want to be the change I needed when I was in ___ situation." Through this lesson plan, I plan to not only be the change for students, but to make my mark!
