Unit 9---Statistics

We will be embarking on our statistics unit.  This unit is our unit 9 (yes right now we are skipping unit 8 we will come back to that after we do Statistics).  During this unit we will be diving into data and looking at how to read it through using measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and also measures of variation.  We will dig deep and graph this data.

What to expect in this unit?

During Unit 9, students will get formal notes and homework each night.  They will learn how to graph and analyze data.

Why does this unit matter?

Knowing how to gather data is a life long skill.  Understanding how to read and analize graphs is a skill that will continue with the students throughout their schooling.

Unit 6--Equations

What are we learning?

The students will embark on the world of Algebra during this unit.  They will learn how to solve an equation, applications of solving equations and writing and graphing inequalities.

What to expect in this unit?

During Unit 6, students will get formal notes and homework each night.  They will learn how to solve one-step equations using inverse operations.

Why does this unit matter?

This is the foundational unit of Algebra.  Students will learn how to solve one step equations.

Unit 3-Decimal Operations

What are we learning?

In Unit 3 we will learn about evaluating decimal operations.  We will be talking about all of the operations including doing word problems involving decimals.

What to expect in this unit?

During Unit 3, students will continue their notes packets in the classroom.  We will also have a checkbook project during this unit where the students will get a scenero at the beginning of each class and they will be given a checkbook log.   We will also be using IXL to complete topics "From your teacher" and recommended topics based on their IXL pre-assessment we took over the last couple of weeks.

Why does this unit matter?

We are working on decimal operations and studnets will see how decimals are going to be used in their daily lives.

Unit 1-Math-Numerical Factors and Expressions

What are we learning?

In Unit 1 we will learn about evaluating expressions that have exponents and by using the order of operations. We then learn about divisibility rules, prime and composite numbers, factors and multiples. We solve problems that deal with greatest common factors and least common multiples.

What to expect in this unit?

During Unit 1, students will get used to our formal notes packet and nightly homework in our homework packet. We will also be using IXL to complete topics "From your teacher" and recommended topics based on their IXL pre-assessment we took over the last couple of weeks.

Why does this unit matter?

We are building on students prior knowledge of evaluating expressions and introducing use of variables in math to solve problems.

Unit 0 - Operations with Whole Numbers

What are we learning?

In 6th grade math, we spend the first few weeks doing Unit 0. Unit 0 is spent reviewing operations with whole numbers.

What to expect in this unit?

During Unit 0, students will get used to our formal notes packet and nightly homework in our homework packet. We will be learning how we collaborate and be engaged in a middle school math class.

Why does this unit matter?

Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers is the building blocks for the new content they will be learning in math this year.

Unit 5 - Expressions and Equations

What are we learning?

The students will embark on the world of Algebra during this unit.  They will learn the difference between an expression and an equation.

What to expect in this unit?

During Unit 5, students will get formal notes and homework each night.  They will learn how to combine like terms, the distributive property, and vocabulary such as terms, coeficients, variables that will take with them for the next few years in math.

Why does this unit matter?

This is the foundational unit of Algebra.  Students will learn how to solve one step equations.

Unit 4---Math-Ratios

What are we learning?

In Unit 4 we will learn about ratios.  This unit is a large 6th grade standard.  We will focus on finding rates, unit rates, equivalent ratios and looking at them through tape diagrams and tables.

What to expect in this unit?

During Unit 4, we will first focus on understanding the difference between a ratio and a rate.  We will then move into unit rates and being able to compare things using unit rates.  From there we will move into percents and finidng the percents of numbers.

Why does this unit matter?

We like to tell students ratios are totally different than a fraction.  Often times this is a misconception of the students because you can write a ratio and a rate as a fraction, yet it means something totally different.  Understanding this is a huge focus.  Through tape diagrams and tables students start to see the difference of these two things.
