Good morning Wetsel families! The School Counseling team at Wetsel has begun uploading our new 30 days of calm videos for students and families due to students reporting a higher amount of stress than normal. In attempting to help provide resources for this, these short (under 10 minute) videos can help with mindfulness, awareness, and bringing us into the present. Please go to the School Counseling Canvas page and select Modules and then select 30 Days of Calm.

Note from the counseling office!

We have exciting news about 8th grade registration, and have been able to open up an option to have students request Earth Science as an elective next year. IF you have already registered, and would like to change, please fill out this form again. I will send home new paper copies of registration with report cards next week. IF your child doesn't want to take Earth Science, please disregard this email, and complete registration as planned.

Greetings from my home to yours! I want to tell you all that I miss each of you and miss your students so much. I am disappointed that our time got cut so short this year. I am put together some activities for you and your student to help support your emotional wellbeing at this time. I’m putting together a social-emotional calendar for families that suggests daily activities for each of you to engage in. If you are anything like my boys and I, you will appreciate having a variety of activities to do during this social distancing period. I will include this with the work sent home from teachers.

In the meantime, please know that I’m here for all of you. If anyone has specific needs or questions, please don’t hesitate to email me: swood@madisonschools.k12.va.us or call the school counseling office (540)948-3783 ext 3521. These calls will be forwarded to either my email (with a message) or to my home. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns, and know that I’m always available if you need anything.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding during this time. I know that I have learned how hard it is to attempt to teach my boys during this time, so please reach out if you have any needs or questions at all.

Please remind your kids that I’m thinking of them, and to always show their BLUE!

Ms. Wood

Counseling Notes - 10/4/19

I know my September update is coming a bit late, as we are at the end of the first week of October! I can’t believe the first quarter is almost over, but be assured that your kids are doing a lot of great things! I did want to send you all an update out to let you know what has been happening through the counseling office! October is a big month, as we help fight breast cancer, celebrate unity, and we work on problem solving skills in the counseling office. Click here if you have a specific need!

Academic - I’ve been working with several classes or individual students on looking at their grades and academic progress. The big push that we are looking for is to increase personal accountability. Students are given a copy of their Powerschool login information, and encouraged to check their grades regularly. As we enter into October and the first quarter ends, I do try to meet with students with failing grades to help them develop plans to get their grades up.

Career - I work a lot with our 7th graders on career exploration and choices. I’ve been working with Miss Daniel’s Career Investigation classes on developing career plans, as well as working individually with some 8th grade students. These plans are going to go out to parents for review soon. In October, we will continue to work on 7th and 8th grade plans, but I will also work with 6th grade students to continue to work on goal setting and starting to identify personal interests.

Personal/Social - I’ve been working on meeting all new students, including 6th graders, and completing minute meetings. These have been slow going, but it is designed to not take much time away from instruction! I’ve loved meeting everyone so far, and the rest of the students will be done by the end of the quarter. October’s focus is going to be on Conflict and Problem solving. If you have a student in need of a small group in this area, please sign them up following this link. There is also an option if a student has a specific need to please fill out the form.

Thank you again for your children, and as always, if you have any needs, please contact me!!!

Counselor Notes - 8/19/19

Happy start to the school year, teachers, parents, and students. Things are a bit different in our school, as we have welcomed a number of new teachers and students. As we are missing some of our old friends, we continue to strive for excellence within the school year. I'm hoping to have updated information to go out to parents monthly to keep you all informed of things that are going on in the school year. Please always feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

Personal/Social - As we are starting the transition into the school year, the following groups will be offered in August/September: Study Skills/Organization and Social Skills. If you or your student has a need, please fill out this form. As always, the counseling department is available for individual student needs.

Career/College - The counseling department is working with Miss Daniel in her career investigation course for 7th graders. We are working on helping students to understand the skills they work on daily will help them in the future. Additionally, students are being given, and taught to use, their student log ins for Parent Portal. This allows both students and parents to keep track of grades and assignments.

Academics - As we are early in the school year, schedules are still undergoing some changes and the counseling department is also a key player in assessing students to ensure that they are in the right classes academically. We are also working to ensure students are able to increase their academics.
