7th Grade Math: Pre-Algebra 1 Syllabus

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,


We hope you all had a wonderful summer and are ready for an exciting year of academic growth. We are very excited to work together to help you achieve your maximum potential in mathematics. This year you will be challenged to explain, prove, and discuss mathematical ideas, while also strengthening your mathematical foundations.


Required Materials: Each day you should bring to class:

  • 1 composition book/notebook (you will have 2 total throughout the year, one per semester). We will use this for notes and daily practice.
  • A binder for homework and handouts.
  • At least two sharpened pencils
  • 1 colored pen
  • 1 set of colored pencils
  • A glue stick
  • A dry erase marker
  • Record and Practice Journal and Textbook (distributed the first week of class)

In our class you are expected to Show your BLUE by:

Being prompt! That means be present and on time. Good attendance is important for success. Students are expected to in the room, seated and prepared to learn when the bell rings.

Being prepared! Students are expected to bring all materials to class.

Being polite! Have respect for other people and their property. -Students should act with respect and courtesy at all times towards all others. -Both actions and words reflect this courtesy.

Being productive! The student is responsible for keeping all school related property in good condition. Use class time wisely.

Being positive! Students will be expected to work alone and in groups to complete class assignments. -Students are expected to be on task and focusing on their work. -Students will use their resources when they need assistance.

Come to class with a smile and a great attitude. Remember our school motto

WWMS Tardy Policy:

  • 1 Tardy - Warning
  • 2 Tardies - Warning and Phone Call Home
  • 3 Tardies- Phone call home and Lunch Detention
  • 4 + Tardies- Referral and After School Detention


WWMS Grading Policy:

The grading guidelines are as follows:

  • Tests – 50%
  • Quizzes – 30%
  • Homework – 10%
  • Classwork – 10%

Homework policy:

Taking the time to think about what you have learned and reflect on any questions you have is an important part of learning. We do not plan on assigning homework every night, however, homework that is assigned is expected to be completed and turned on time.


Late Daily Homework:

One day late – lose 15 points

Two or more days late – lose 25 points

Never turned in before end of that grade reporting period – 0% (F)


Late Projects/Writing Prompts:

Lose 10 points the first day and 5 points each additional day late with a maximum penalty of 35 points

Never turned in before end of that grade reporting period – 0% (F)


Note: Each marking period consists of two grade-reporting periods – Weeks 1-4 and Weeks 5-9.


Make up work for extended absences should be completed as soon as possible after the student returns unless other arrangements are made.


Parent/Guardian Communication:

Each week I will send out a weekly email letting you know what I will be doing in class this week. I encourage you to contact me with any concerns or questions.

Math Mondays:

We will be available after school on Monday afternoons for tutoring. Parents should let us know via email or a note that their student will be staying. Students need to be be picked up by 4:15 at the front of the school. This is also a good time for students who have been absent to make up tests or quizzes.


Tentative Course Outline:


  • Quarter One: Exponents, Square Roots and Scientific Notation, Integer Operations, Fractions, Decimals and Percents, Properties of Operations
  • Quarter Two: Sequences, Algebraic Expressions, Tables Graphs and Function, Equations and Inequalities, Tables Graphs and Function
  • Quarter Three: Porportional Reasoning, Quadrilaterals and Similar Figures, Transformations
  • Quarter Four: Surface Area and Volume, Histograms, Probability
