World War II Era
World War II Era
As I spent time going through the yearbooks with students who helped scan images, I realized that the yearbooks themselves helped paint the true picture of what life was like over the past 100 years. The yearbooks from the World War II era captured the patriotism and the tremendous impact the war had on the Madison community.
Students had to deal with blackouts, rationing, lack of supplies, and air raid drills. However, these sacrifices and changes were nothing compared to dealing with the horrors of America being at war. With that said, these difficult times brought the community together.
209 Madisonians served during the war and 41 died in action (Malcolm).
The yearbooks paid tribute to the senior students who entered the Armed Services either by enlisting or being drafted. The students paid tribute to our brave soldiers through artwork, poetry, and essays.
The residents of Madison purchased $125,000 in war bonds in December of 1942 to provide the "Spirit of Madison," to our soldiers (Cunningham, 217).
Farewell ceremony honoring men leaving for service. This early morning scene was often repeated as the war intensified (Cunningham, 216).
